According to the Detroit Free Press, the advertisement, which was signed by the heads of 7 Black-owned media companies, declares that Barra declined to consult with them “regularly, gradually and after numerous demands.” They likewise requested for an hour-long Zoom meeting with Barra, or her resignation.
Combs referrals that advertisement in his letter, which keeps in mind that “While REVOLT does get marketing earnings from GM, our relationship is not an example of success. Instead, REVOLT, similar to other Black-owned media companies, fights for crumbs while GM makes billions of dollars every year from the Black community. Exposing GM’s historical refusal to fairly invest in Black-owned media is not an assassination of character, it’s exposing the way GM and many other advertisers have always treated us.”

WE NEED MORE: A LETTER FROM SEAN COMBS
“If you are neutral in circumstances of injustice, you have actually selected the side of the oppressor.” — Desmond Tutu
The very same feet these business utilize to stand with us in solidarity are the same feet they use to base on our necks.
When confronted by the leaders of several Black-owned media business, General Motors (GM) noted my network, REVOLT, as an example of the Black-owned media it supports. While REVOLT does receive marketing profits from GM, our relationship is not an example of success. Instead, REVOLT, just like other Black-owned media business, defend crumbs while GM makes billions of dollars every year from the Black neighborhood. Exposing GM’s historical refusal to relatively invest in Black-owned media is not an assassination of character, it’s exposing the method GM and many other marketers have constantly treated us. No longer can Corporate America manipulate our neighborhood into believing that incremental development is appropriate action.
Corporations like General Motors have exploited our culture, undermined our power, and omitted Black business owners from getting involved in the value produced by Black consumers. In 2019, brand names spent $239 billion on marketing. Less than 1% of that was purchased Black-owned media business. Out of the approximately $3 billion General Motors invested in advertising, we approximate just $10 million was invested in Black-owned media. Just $10 million out of $3 billion! Like the rest of corporate America, General Motors is telling us to sit down, shut up and be delighted with what we get.
It’s ill-mannered that Black-owned media companies only represent 1% of the total advertising market. It’s ill-mannered that distributors refuse to bring Black-owned media brands in an era where our impact and impact is indisputable. It’s ill-mannered that the same community that represents 14% of the population and invests over $1.4 trillion each year is still the most economically undervalued and underserved at every level. To repeat, $1.4 TRILLION ANNUALLY! The Almighty Black Dollar!
We require that Business America reinvest an equitable portion of what you take from our community back into our neighborhood. If the Black community represents 15% of your revenue, Black-owned media ought to receive a minimum of 15% of the marketing invest. The same method you comprehend the power of our dollars, we understand our power to take them far from any corporation that does not provide us the economic inclusion we are worthy of. We are prepared to weaponize our dollars.
If you enjoy us, pay us! Not a token investment. Not a charity check or contribution.
The time is now! Radical change is the only option. You’re either with us or you are on the other side.
